Adult lactose tolerance is not an advantageous evolutionary trait.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION.Some adult humans, unlike the remaining adult mammals, have the possibility to feed on milk (lactose tolerance, LT) based on lactase persistence (LP) in enterocytes. This condition has been observed mainly among populations originating in northwestern Europe, and in some ethnic groups around the Mediterranean and Near East, in Africa, and on the Indian subcontinent that have a long tradition of dairing, some 6000-9000 years. As the ancestral state was that of non-LP, adult LT is considered an advantageous evolutionary trait, that is genetically determined by mutation and that has been brought about through centuries of natural selection; this allows carriers to have milk as a nutritional resource in times of shortage, as a source of water in desert environments, and even as a source of calcium. In the absence of genetic challenge, as has been the case for the majority of the world’s populations, no evolution occurred.

A stochastic model of gene-culture coevolution suggested by the "culture historical hypothesis" for the evolution of adult lactose absorption in humans.
A stochastic model of gene-culture coevolution, suggested by the "culture historical hypothesis" of Simoons and McCracken, is presented. According to this hypothesis, adult lactose absorption, believed to be an autosomal dominant trait, attained a high frequency in some human populations due to the positive selection pressure induced by culturally determined milk use in those populations. Two-d...
متن کاملPhylogenetic analysis of the evolution of lactose digestion in adults. 1997.
In most of the world's population the ability to digest lactose declines sharply after infancy. High lactose digestion capacity in adults is common only in populations of European and circum-Mediterranean origin and is thought to be an evolutionary adaptation to millennia of drinking milk from domestic livestock. Milk can also be consumed in a processed form, such as cheese or soured milk, whic...
متن کاملLactose digestion in pregnant African-Americans.
OBJECTIVE This paper reports on the status of lactose digestion during early and late pregnancy and at 8 weeks postpartum in an African-American population. The hypothesis is that lactose digestion and milk tolerance do not change throughout pregnancy and do not differ from those of non-pregnant African-American women. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS This longitudinal study determined lactose digestion a...

Nowadays, Robots account for most part of our lives in such a way that it is impossible for usto do many of affairs without them. Increasingly, the application of robots is developing fastand their functions become more sensitive and complex. One of the important requirements ofRobot use is a reliable software operation. For enhancement of reliability, it is a necessity todesign the fault toler...
متن کاملImproved accuracy of lactose tolerance test in children, using expired H2 measurement.
Expired hydrogen and blood glucose were measured during an oral lactose tolerance test in 163 children aged between 9 months and 14 years. Lactose malabsorption, defined as an abnormal increase in expired H2 during a lactose tolerance test, was found in 54 children. Of these, 30 were found to be lactose intolerant as the increased expired H2 was accompanied by clinical symptoms. The other 109 c...
